Carolyn Peterson and the entire Peterson family have been major supporters of Life with Cancer since the program opened its doors in September 1988. Carolyn Peterson was the first Board president and served in that position for ten years. Thanks to her wonderful leadership an the on-going support of her family, Life with Cancer was able to grow and prosper and become a major resource for families in the Washington Metropolitan area dealing with a cancer diagnosis.

As the program gained increasing recognition for its good work, Carolyn was instrumental in convincing Inova Health System to build a new facility that would provide the right kind of environment to improve the quality of life for cancer patients and their loved ones. Thus in the year 2003, the concept of a Life with Cancer Family Center became a reality and the Peterson family then dedicated its resources to raising the funds necessary to build the Center under the leadership of Carolyn's daughter, Lauren Peterson Fellows. In recognition of Carolyn's leadership and the family's long standing dedication to the program, the Life with Cancer Board of Directors voted unanimously to name the Center "Carolyn's House".
